The Kontorhausviertel is considered one of the most impressive city quarters in all of Germany from the 1920s. Due to the cholera pandemic in 1892, the old buildings in the city centre were demolished and replaced by the first pure office district. Together with the nearby Speicherstadt, the central part around Burchardplatz was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
