The Golden Horseman is a famous equestrian statue in Dresden. It shows Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, in ancient Roman armor on a horse. The statue is completely gilded and stands at Neustädter Markt, at the entrance to the main street in the Innere Neustadt district.
The monument was unveiled in 1736 - one year after the death of Augustus the Strong. It was created by the sculptor Lorenzo Mattielli. It shows the ruler in a heroic pose, riding eastwards towards Poland - a reference to his royal dignity.
The Golden Horseman is one of Dresden's most famous landmarks and a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike.
